A thin client system is composed of very small terminals each of which connects to a windows and/or linux server capable of serving many workstations.  Since each user is effectively sharing the same computer, network resources are used very efficiently reducing hardware costs.  Only one computer needs to be configured, updated and supported.   What would normally be expensive computers at each desk are replaced by low energy consuming workstations which may cost as little as  $100 each.   Thin clients have no fans, no hard drives, and few parts to break.  In large part they are invulnerable to viruses, hacking and many of the hardware issues that full computers with their many additional components face.  Best of all, they are small and free up precious desk space.  

Linux LTSP thin client systems are legendary for their performance on even the slowest of hardware.  They are frequently used in developing counties to build school, business and cyber-cafe networks using what would normally be discarded and obsolete equipment.   If it runs that fast on a Pentium III, imagine how fast it runs on a Core2 Duo server.
